It was Easter, 1978 when we opened our retail shop here in Wales , in one of the most beautiful coastal locations to be found in Britain . We had spent the previous 17 years manufacturing jewellery in Hatton Garden in London , and in Australia . Barmouth, a small resort at the mouth of the stunning Mawddach Estuary, was a gem waiting for us to discover.
Jennifer runs the retail side of the business. She buys the stock for the shop (sourced from designers in many parts of the world), and when she has time loves to design and make. She is also administrator, accountant, book-keeper, window dresser and shop keeper. It will usually be her you will speak to if you need to telephone.
Husband Ray has the easy life! He hides in his workshop and keeps very busy with special commissions from customers who like to have something a little different, and in between the many repairs and remakes etc. designs and makes many unique pieces exclusive to our shop.
Our customers come from many parts of the country, some of them regular visitors to our shop here at The Steps because they appreciate what we provide, which is very different from most jewellery outlets - in design, choice, and in the way the jewellery is displayed.
None of our jewellery is ‘costume jewellery' – we sell only Gold (in all qualities and colours available), Platinum , and Silver , with a small range of steel with gold . We prefer to be individual, some pieces being ‘one-offs', many of which are made by ourselves in our workshop here. We use many different stones, from the ever popular Diamonds, Rubies, Emeralds and Sapphires (in many colours), to the more unusual - Rutilated Quartz, Fire Agate , and everything in between. We are astonished how little use is made of all the beautiful varieties and colours of stones which are available, and we try to make full use of nature's palette.
We have always tried to appeal to a wide range of tastes, our most popular lines being Modern and Contemporary Jewellery , but we also provide Traditional Jewellery and our own range of Celtic Jewellery designs.
We hope you will enjoy browsing our website, which shows a varied selection from our shop, but we will never be able to show all of our jewellery here, and stock is constantly changing. So if you can't find what you are looking for please contact us – we may be able to help. Perhaps you will be tempted to visit us one day to see the much larger range which is available. Email or phone for shop hours as, like our jewellery, they too can be unusual!
Barmouth and the Mawddach are beautiful places, with good food and places to stay. See our links for more information.
